New Sports Heroes, pt. 1

I'm pretty fascinated by the subtle - yet undeniable - breakthrough of underdog sports which require little or no physical prowess or natural instinct; for instance, darts.
So I figured I'd do a mini-blog series about underling sports and their big men.

Darts has two primary official organizations, the British Dart Organisation (hereon referred to as the BDO) and the Professional Dart Corporation (hereon referred to as the PDC).

The BDO is the longer-standing of the two, having been founded in 1973. BDO tournaments are most commonly aired by the BBC. Until 1994, the BDO was the only English speaking professional darts organization. In this year the PDC was founded (it's original title was the World Darts Federation, but this was later changed). The PDC is commonly viewed as the upstart organisation. Offering bigger prizes, better sponsors, and greater publicity has helped the PDC bring darts further into the public consciousness.

The sport of darts has many upstanding heroes, many of which (through a gimmick of the PDC) have nicknames. The indisputable champion is Phil Taylor (a.k.a. The Power), 13 time winner of the World Championship. He rose to stardom (well, the type of stardom associated with a world champsionship of darts) in 1990 when he beat 125-1 odds to conquer his idol Eric Bristow in the Embassy World Final; and get this, his mom's name is Elizabeth Taylor.

EDIT: ok so i sort of gave up on this project before it got off the ground. but thats sort of what summer is about, right?

anyways, sometimes it feels really good to be aggressive.

and as a treat, as an apology for my sheer laziness and lack of commitment regarding NEW SPORTS HEROES, i give you this...

dear vh1, sony, and spin magazine,
please stop trying to make pearl jam cool. grunge is over and eddie vedder came out smelling like a rose, sure. but he is no hero. and not much of a rock star, to be honest. and you have the nerve to compare them to such greats as elvis costello, ray davies and james taylor. fuck you.

thanks a bunch,
meghan logue

in other news, i started a blogger after much heavy (ok light and infrequent) peer pressure from caitlin. what can i say, i'm impressionable.
